Dealing With Online Hate

A huge part of being openly transgender online is dealing with hate messages/comments. It is something I have to deal with often and honestly something I have sadly become used to.

When you share your authenticity online, it will anger some people to a point where they feel the need to attack you. That’s where having the ability to turn away from those comments and messages comes in handy.

Not every message or comment needs to be read, not every comment or message needs to be addressed. I love sharing my transition online because it allows me to connect with others and offer help where I can. However people who come to attack you as a person are not worth the stress and time it takes to argue back and forth. Instead when interested, focus on the positive comments, the messages that are heartfelt, and the people who are addressing you with respect in mind. That is where you will make connections, and that is where your time is best spent.

Of course if you feel up to it, you can address those who are disrespectful, hurtful, and ignorant. But just remember that a few online trolls don’t take away who you are and why you are sharing your transition online.
