How Do I Shave?

When I first started transitioning, I didn’t know how to shave. It was a huge learning process, one that took years to really figure out.

Shaving in the direction of the hair is a must as shaving in the opposite direction can cause ingrown hairs and irritation. Not all your hair will grow in one direction. Sitting down and looking at the different patterns your hair makes will help you learn which ways to shave.

For me personally the hair on the left side of my face grows straight downward while on the right side of my face it grows sideways towards my ear. When I shave, I keep this in mind so that I don’t end up with ingrown hairs on one side of my face, but not on the other.

The other important thing to keep in mind is using a good shaving cream to help reduce irritation and razor burn. Now this may take some trial and error to find a good one, I do have a shaving cream under my Beard Care page which I highly recommend checking out if standard shaving cream is still giving you issues.
